Thumbs down Case study In funk...

Monday night we got an assault run up the street from our quarters. On arrival, we found an intoxicated man down in a park unconscious/unresponsive.

DPD couldn't rouse him, nor could we for that matter. The guy had obvious swelling to his face and head and had some dried blood in his hair.

As we provided C-spine precautions, the stench began to hit us. The back doors of the rig closed and our A/C, vents and fan were all in full force. My partner and I began to cut his clothes off and the stench grew into a mixture of B.O., urine, shit and vomit.

He had on 7 shirts, a winter coat, 4 pairs of pants and cowboy boots. My partner cut his shirts up the middle and he handed me the shears to continue by cutting his coat...HUUUUGE mistake!

I got 6 inches up the arm of the coat and the pinfeathers and down began to fly in the back of the rig....funk scented down at that!

After we got him into the trauma room, the full reality of stank funk really his as they took his boots off and removed his 3 month old socks...huge splotches of white, hairy mold was growing on his feet in great quantities. The smell was so intense, it drove doctors and staff members alike from the trauma room until someone finally wrapped his feet in blankets to knock it down.

A short time later, he was on a vent and on his way to the O.R. for a brain bleed due to his assault.

The stench in the back of our bus was so intense that despite leaving every door in the back end open in conjunction with our vents, fan and A/C running AND spraying the back end with deodorizing spray, it still took nearly an hour for the smell to go away....that and I had inhaled several bits of down fluff that nearly made me barf after coughing for several minutes to get it out of my airway.

This guy made my top 5 stank funk runs of my career.

We had a guy like that once. Not that bad, but all the layers of coats and stuff sounds famillar.

At least the residentally challenged urban outdoorsman we picked up last shift had slept in some evergreen bushes. He had a nice wintergreen smell about him. Kinda like a green tree air freshener.

Not if you jam it far enough up your nostrils. :) Just have to remember to keep your mouth closed... or the funk will seep in that way.

I had one almost as bad in the ER when I was doing clinicals... it was a homeless guy who hadn't bathed in... oh... about a year, smelled like. His BA was .340... and he was still conscious! He apparently had the bad luck to be standing next to a black SUV (Escalade, I think) when some miscreant decided to carjack it, and it ran over his left foot as the spun out... tore his great toe in half, and crushed the rest of his toes on his left foot and he had cellulitis already setting in...

The nurses sent me in to get a line on him, giggling the whole time. I walked in there, and was immediatel hit by wall of BO, Alcohol, foot funk, and the always-popular smell of dead, rotting flesh. I swear to God, it took a week to get that smell out of my nose. <shudder>

We have a guy that goes in to HFH on a regular basis with a BA of at the highest I've heard, was .510...still conscious and got into a fist fight with me, E.R. staff and security police...not nearly equal in funk to my top 5 though lol!!!
