Default Bug Bites

Last sunday was my sons 4th Birthday.
My friend Bobbie brought her 2 boys out. The little one was with us all day, first to the fire station, then down to the park and out on the rocks along the river. then he went home where his dad was removing an old deck.

We aren't sure exactly when it happened but Daylen got bit by something.

What ever it was left a bite on his neck, (sorry no pics) there was 2 small punctures and a larger one all in close (mm apart) proximity.
Again because of lack of awareness as to when the "bite?" happened we arent sure if he had a delayed reaction to it or immediate.
Daylen is also 4, more than 20lbs heavier than Brandon, but he reacted so violently. From the conversations with Bobbie, she has said he was turning blue, blew up like a balloon and was covered in hives from head to toe.
Dad is a FF and he rushed daylen into the hospital(live 2 minutes from hospital- ems would have been more than 7 minutes away). 24 hrs in hospital.

Any idea as to what the hell could have bit him?
Mom is adament she doesnt want an epi-pen for him....... my concern is I often take him to the park/river with us, and because of where it is, EMS/FIRE is a good 5 minute hard run(I mean run) to get to us (if it was a bug by the river)
Would you restrict the types of activities with a child like this without epi?
Would you consider this a one off?
Or would you be concerned about another kid being bitten and reacting just as violently? (ask cause we spend many a nights over at their place and many a weekends at the river)

Any thoughts??

I don't know about the bug, because we all know that you have strange and dangerous bugs up there in canada. But talk to the MD. If it is his suggestion that the lad has an epi pen then so be it. Have your kids ever had any kind of recation like this.

Do a little research and talk with the MD. THey might be able to tell you where to start looking.

Thankfully so far my son is only allergic to penicillan
at least to my knowledge.

Again I don't know which MD saw her kid in the ED.
But I am concerned because I often take her kid out with us, as well as other kids.
I just don't want to risk anyone else's kid needlessly. I also don't want to tell Daylen he cant come with us cause of this either. Then he would be the one to suffer so would Brandon cause he loves playing with his buddies.

Tough call. Just be careful and have a plan should something happen. May want to keep some PO Benadryl with you for mild/moderate reactions, just in case.

Why is the kid's mother so against having an epi pen?

she is anti everything.
I think if dad wasnt home when it happened the child wouldnt have been given medical attention.
It seems more and more parents are avoiding medical .........
2 kids at daycare showed up with full blown chicken pox, cause their mom didnt vaccinate.
another refuses to take her 4 yr old to the dentist. (she has dental coverage)
Another needed dental work on all their teeth because mom didnt feel it was necessary to A) brush teeth, B) dental visits to ensure dental health C) waited till kid was in agony from rotten teeth.

I swear people are anti medical of any sort......... and it is costing society and the child in question

doc that would fly up here
unless the child is being sexually abused or living in a grow op/meth lab they really dont care a whole lot.
Especially when the parents are coupled. Now if it was a single parent they might pay a bit more attention as they believe that no single parent is capable of raising a child without assistance. BS! if you ask me
