B.C. police warn drivers to secure belongings after woman killed by laptop

Thu Apr 16, 12:44 AM

By The Canadian Press

SURREY, B.C. - Mounties in Surrey, B.C., say a woman who died in a car accident last month appears to have been killed by her laptop computer.

Heather Storey, 25, was driving to work March 16 when her vehicle was hit by a tow truck. Storey's laptop was sitting unsecured in her back seat and RCMP spokesman Sgt. Roger Morrow says the vehicle's abrupt stop sent the computer flying into the back of Storey's head. The force of the blow was so severe that it shattered the computer's screen and bent the frame.

The coroner determined that Storey died as a result of blunt force trauma.

Morrow says investigators believe the accident was survivable and that police are warning the public to secure their belongings while driving.

Yeah we had a woman get her arm pretty much shattered by a 6 pack cooler that'd been sitting on her passenger seat a few years ago.

1 gallon paint cans on the rear deck make a hell of a mess of your head as well. Ironicly enough, red paint.

Back in school the county "wear your seatbelt" educator lady told us about a woman who had been killed by a box of kleenex. That whole speed of car at impact=X gs of force thing turned a .5 pound box into a 30 pound box.

Nunavut - The aviation community in the North is abuzz with praise for a flight crew who managed to land a small plane in Nunavut after a distraught passenger opened a door at 7,000 metres and jumped.

The pilot of the Adlair Aviation King Air 200 declared an on-board emergency Wednesday as the cabin of the plane quickly depressurized, filling the cockpit with a roar of frigid, Arctic air.

The plane, a twin-engine turboprop, managed to safely put down with its door wide open at Cambridge Bay.

I had an old co-worker suffer eye trauma after she was in a wreck while holding a laptop (as a passenger) - the airbag smashed the laptop right into her face.

Former Utah congressman dead of ATV accident
AP

SALT LAKE CITY – Former Utah congressman Bill Orton died in an ATV accident when his machine flipped over on a sand dune at Little Sahara Recreation Area. He was 60.

Juab County Sheriff Alden Orme told The Associated Press that Orton died almost immediately of his injuries about 4 p.m. Saturday.

Orton, a Democrat, was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991 to 1997. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for Utah governor in 2000.

Orme said Orton was riding alone when his all-terrain vehicle crested a sand dune and the machine crashed, flipping over on him.

His body was taken by ambulance to Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi. An autopsy is pending.

Orton, who was wearing a helmet, was among thousands of four-wheel enthusiasts at the popular park, "a fun but dangerous place to ride," the sheriff said.

"Out there, it's a lot of rolling hills. He went off a sand dune without realizing how far down he was going," he said.

Injuries are common. Orme said several other riders Saturday were involved in crashes or collisions, and more than two dozen were injured last weekend, when five had to be airlifted by medical helicopters to hospitals.

University of Utah law professor Scott Matheson, a Democratic figure who knew Orton well, called his death "shocking and tragic."

"Bill was very smart and capable. He was a dedicated public servant and continued to have much public service to offer," Matheson said. "Voters in the most Republican district in the country thought so much of his talents that they elected him as a Democrat to Congress three times. He worked hard and effectively on their behalf."

Orton is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn, and two sons, Will and Wes.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Jacquelyn and the Orton children at this difficult time," Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said in a statement late Saturday.

"He was a dedicated public servant who worked to serve his constituents to the very best of his ability. He loved his family greatly and he also loved our wonderful state. He will be missed by many for his knowledge and experience, including me," Hatch said.
