Description
Calcium Chloride provides elemental calcium in cases of hypocalcaemia. It causes
a significant increase in myocardial contractile force, and increases
ventricular automaticity. Calcium chloride is an antidote for Magnesium sulfate,
and can minimize some of the side effects ofcalcium channel blocker usage.
Indications
Acute hyperkalemia, acute hypocalcaemia, calcium channel blocker toxicity, hyper
magnesium
Contraindications
1. Calcium may precipitate Digitalis toxicity in patients taking Digoxin.
2. Ventricular fibrillation
Adverse Reactions
Bradycardia, arrhythmias, syncope, nausea, vomiting, cardiac arrest,
arteriospasm
Drug Interactions
1. Flush IV line between administrations of Calcium Chloride and Sodium
Bicarbonate to avoid precipitation.
2. Calcium chloride can cause elevated digoxin levels, and Digitalis toxicity

hose patients receiving digitalis preparations.
Precautions
1. Flush IV line between administrations of Calcium Chloride and Sodium
Bicarbonate to avoid precipitation.
2. Extravasation (IV infiltration) causes necrosis
