A historical tidbit

1940's - Prior to World War II, hospitals provided ambulance service in many large cities. With the severe manpower shortages imposed by the war effort, it became difficult for many hospitals to maintain their ambulance operations. City governments in many cases turned ambulance service over to the police or fire department. No laws required minimal training for ambulance personnel and no training programs existed beyond basic first aid existed. In many fire departments, assignment to ambulance duty became an unofficial form of punishment.

The NYC Department of Hospitals, which became the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation, provided ambulance service from the late 1800's until 1996. Originally called the Division of Ambulance Transport, it became the New York City Emergency Medical Service in 1970. This lasted until we were hijacked by, ooops merged into the FD in 1996.

A little trivia: The ambulances which ran out of Bellevue Hospital ( now the site of FDNY EMS station 8) was the first municipal ambulance.

In 1928 the first formal, full-time air ambulance service was established in the Australian outback. This organization became the Royal Flying Doctor Serviceand continues operating to the present. Project CARESOM was established in Mississippi in 1969. Three helicopters were purchased through a federal grant and located strategically in north, central and southern areas of the state. Upon termination of the grant the program was considered a success and each of the three communities was given the opportunity to continue the helicopter operation. Only the one located in Hattiesburg did so, thereby establishing the first civilian air medical program in the United States.

That being said there were 3 other areas with Paramedic programs going on at the same time: Miami, Seattle, and LA.

These programs were as a result of a publication involving the US Military and their review of the Medical Corpsman in 1966.
