B.C. police warn drivers to secure belongings after woman killed by laptop
Thu Apr 16, 12:44 AM
By The Canadian Press
SURREY, B.C. - Mounties in Surrey, B.C., say a woman who died in a car accident last month appears to have been killed by her laptop computer.
Heather Storey, 25, was driving to work March 16 when her vehicle was hit by a tow truck. Storey's laptop was sitting unsecured in her back seat and RCMP spokesman Sgt. Roger Morrow says the vehicle's abrupt stop sent the computer flying into the back of Storey's head. The force of the blow was so severe that it shattered the computer's screen and bent the frame.
The coroner determined that Storey died as a result of blunt force trauma.
Morrow says investigators believe the accident was survivable and that police are warning the public to secure their belongings while driving.

Yeah we had a woman get her arm pretty much shattered by a 6 pack cooler that'd been sitting on her passenger seat a few years ago.

1 gallon paint cans on the rear deck make a hell of a mess of your head as well. Ironicly enough, red paint.

Back in school the county "wear your seatbelt" educator lady told us about a woman who had been killed by a box of kleenex. That whole speed of car at impact=X gs of force thing turned a .5 pound box into a 30 pound box.

Nunavut - The aviation community in the North is abuzz with praise for a flight crew who managed to land a small plane in Nunavut after a distraught passenger opened a door at 7,000 metres and jumped.
The pilot of the Adlair Aviation King Air 200 declared an on-board emergency Wednesday as the cabin of the plane quickly depressurized, filling the cockpit with a roar of frigid, Arctic air.
The plane, a twin-engine turboprop, managed to safely put down with its door wide open at Cambridge Bay.

I had an old co-worker suffer eye trauma after she was in a wreck while holding a laptop (as a passenger) - the airbag smashed the laptop right into her face.

Former Utah congressman dead of ATV accident

SALT LAKE CITY – Former Utah congressman Bill Orton died in an ATV accident when his machine flipped over on a sand dune at Little Sahara Recreation Area. He was 60.
Juab County Sheriff Alden Orme told The Associated Press that Orton died almost immediately of his injuries about 4 p.m. Saturday.
Orton, a Democrat, was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991 to 1997. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for Utah governor in 2000.
Orme said Orton was riding alone when his all-terrain vehicle crested a sand dune and the machine crashed, flipping over on him.
His body was taken by ambulance to Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi. An autopsy is pending.
Orton, who was wearing a helmet, was among thousands of four-wheel enthusiasts at the popular park, "a fun but dangerous place to ride," the sheriff said.
"Out there, it's a lot of rolling hills. He went off a sand dune without realizing how far down he was going," he said.
Injuries are common. Orme said several other riders Saturday were involved in crashes or collisions, and more than two dozen were injured last weekend, when five had to be airlifted by medical helicopters to hospitals.
University of Utah law professor Scott Matheson, a Democratic figure who knew Orton well, called his death "shocking and tragic."
"Bill was very smart and capable. He was a dedicated public servant and continued to have much public service to offer," Matheson said. "Voters in the most Republican district in the country thought so much of his talents that they elected him as a Democrat to Congress three times. He worked hard and effectively on their behalf."
Orton is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn, and two sons, Will and Wes.
"My thoughts and prayers are with Jacquelyn and the Orton children at this difficult time," Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said in a statement late Saturday.
"He was a dedicated public servant who worked to serve his constituents to the very best of his ability. He loved his family greatly and he also loved our wonderful state. He will be missed by many for his knowledge and experience, including me," Hatch said.

Because he can. Riding isn't like you're riding in a car together, and unless you have $300 of equipment you can't talk to each other while riding. I mean, yeah, it's kinda fun to ride with other people, but if I feel like going out on a ride I don't go with other people most of the time.
It's all about the level of risk we decide to take. You are not risky as I, and I don't expect you to understand the things that I do for fun. Riding is inheritly high risk. The risk goes up the more people you crowd into an area. But, why outlaw their riding there? They're just going to ride somewhere else that could be illegal, i.e. some state parks and private property. I'd be pissed if people decided to ride on my land. He could have ridden in a forest and hit a tree. He could have tried to cross a small stream and drowned. No matter where you ride you're going to have injuries whether people are careless or careful. We have them here from people riding on their own land. Why not just outlaw ATV's altogether then?

Well sure lets do that because it works so well. Look at when we outlaw other things like Pot, Assault Rifles, Cocaine, Heroin, Alcohol during Prohibition, and the list goes on. It works so well. (read sarcasm here)
The fact is that the vast majority of riders are safe and ride without incident. Most of the folks that are injured or killed are where they shouldn't be, doing what they shouldn't be doing. Hmmm, that sounds so familiar. You are right QT, riding anything is inherently dangerous. But there never are any stories about the thousands of folks that ride every weekend, hell everyday, safely and without incident. I absolutely love to ride and will do so every single time I have the chance, no matter if I am alone of not. Same goes with wheeling my Jeep.
I just contributed to the hijacking of this thread, dammit.
Back on topic, being killed by flying debris. Had a lovely MVA where a gentleman was struck by a Come-Along he had in the bed of his truck. The MVA alone would not have killed him, but the crap he had in the bed of his truck sure did.

For those that live or play out in the middle of god forsaken nowhere (not that it is a bad thing), it is more conducive to patient care to MEDEVAC them to a Level I Trauma Center. This is done based on the mechanism of injury rather than dick around and ground pound them to the local band aid station. Been there done that.
Not sure why I am even attempting to explain it, not like it matters. Those who do it, get it.

Back up the bus... That was sarcasm.... Everything I said was in support of riding in that area with the exception of that last line. I was simply answering TD's question about why there is riding allowed in such a high risk area. If you outlaw riding at that venue, accidents will still happen other places when they ride elsewhere. If you are in favor of outlawing one just outlaw the whole damn thing because it makes no sense. Look at my avatar--Do you honestly think I would be in favor of outlawing my own sport? I've ridden motorcycles, dirtbikes (including plenty of hill climbing), and 4 wheelers throughout my life, and I've only had one ER visit which resulted in a metatarsal fracture because I did something stupid and crashed into a stationary object.

espically when the local band aid centers are level 3's and the closest level 1 is about a hour (traffic depending) by ground.

Japanese woman gets death for curry murder
Tue Apr 21, 11:18 AM
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Supreme Court sentenced a woman to death on Tuesday for killing four and making more than 60 ill by poisoning a large pot of curry at a summer festival in 1998, a case widely covered in domestic media.
The incident shocked Japan, where crime rates are relatively low and mass killings extremely rare.
Public broadcaster NHK reported the Supreme Court upheld a lower court death sentence on Masumi Hayashi, 47, for the crime that took place in the western Japanese city of Wakayama.
The Supreme Court called the crime "cruel and despicable," NHK added.
Prosecutors charged Hayashi became enraged after being shunned by her neighbors and put arsenic in the curry when she was alone in the garage where it was being prepared, Japanese media said.
Hayashi has denied being involved in the deaths in recent interviews with several domestic media outlets.
