hey there,

I stumbled upon this forum and thought I'd register and say hi.

I am a HSE Rep/Medic for an offshore oil rig. I'm currently working in Scotland but will probably end up in Africa soon. I also have experience working in Brazil, India and the good ole USA.

I have been an EMT-I for about 2 years. I'll get my paramedic when my company decides to pay me to do it, or make it mandatory that all their HSE Reps become one.

I received my EMT training in New Orleans on the Westbank with West Jefferson Medical Center and really enjoyed the experience. While I probably don't get near the "excitement" that most of you guys get, I'd love to listen to a few war stories, and pick up a pointer or two.

The work is pretty interesting some days. The rig I'm on currently has a medic from the UK so I play second fiddle to him in case things ever got that bad.

I mostly deal with the proactive side with accident prevention, rather than the reactive approach of EMS.

I'm probably going to have to get some time in with my hometown's EMS crew, just because if I'm doing my job right, I'll never have to patch someone up offshore. That, and I'm scared if I don't use it, I'll lose it.

I had a real long-winded answer but I got kicked off so here's the abridged version:

I work a 28 on/28 off schedule. Most guys work a 14/14 schedule. I'm different because I do work outside the US and it's not cost-effective to fly me back and forth to work so often.

Pay: Well, so as not to piss of those who work their ass off to barely get by, I'll refrain from answering that question completely. I will say I only have one job. My wife does work, and we do get by. We do see those times where there is too much month at the end of the money though. That tends to happen when you have a 5 and a 6 year old tearing about the house as well.

Cool job! I'm just about done my MS degree in safety, and will be working in the safety managemet field starting this summer, hopefully in construction management, but it would be neat to be able to use, and thus keep, my "P."

What sort of safety type work do you do? What types op medic skills?
