Ok just when you think you have heard it all. We got a call for ambulances to respond to the coal mine for two patients coming up from the mine. We were guessing an explosion of some kind. We had 2 ambulances hauling ass (medicprincess) of course was in one of those ambulances. Anyway they have like a 15 to 20 min response going emergency (not to mention it is a 2 lane road that is really curvy. They are about 5 out when they cancel both ambulances and said that they pt's were going pov to shelby hosp. Needless to say a few hours later I get a call for a vent transfer going from shelby to University Hosp trauma room, then 2 min later they ask for a 2nd ambulance for a 2nd ambulance to transfer a vent pt from another ed room going from Shelby to University. One of the other medics looked at me and said that "I bet it is those mine workers". Sure enough it was me and medicgoddess that responding to the hosp for the transfer. When we got there sure enough it was the mine pt's both on vents with 3rd degree burns on head, neck, face, chest, back and both forearms. both were on a versid (sp on that one). Needless to say my pt was awake and responding to me with thumbs up. The whole thing was so cool and the best was the look on my basic students face during the ride as the smell was a bit more than he could handle. We are not really sure what the thinking was behind the minning crew taking them by car. They looked awful. Just goes to shoe you that those that need to go by ambulance don't. Medicprincess did an awsome job as usual. It is times like this that I feel like I actually make a difference.

That was crazy. I was probably less than a half mile away from the mine entrance when 911 cancelled us. Trevor was so mad. I thought they had taken them all the way to UAB. All in all it was pretty cool. Stunk up my truck though. Kudos to you too Princess.

That is the truth... I warned my basic student about the order is was about to smell even had him get a mask once the door was shut he just set on the bench not looking to good and being very quiet. You should have seen him approach the pt on the vent to listen to lung sounds on him. I have to give him kudos because he didn't throw up and he did do pretty well

Wilde call. I know how the student feals I ran a sepsis transfer and the pt was actually rotting from the inside out(rotting=due to lack of better term) I put a mask on an rubbd hand sanitizernon the outside so that I could smell that instead. But it is calls like that that can make you say thiss is why I do thiss.

You know that is what I was thinking. I have to tell you everything went right on that call. It made me feel good about what I do. When we got them transfered over in the trauma and were walking out we saw 2 medic students standing outside just looking. I went up to them and said you better get on in there and see some cool burns and. My pt was on a versid drip and unable to move yet his eyes where wide open and able to communicate with me by giving me a thumbs up. It would have been the coolest thing for them to see.

I remember my burn rotation at UAB . The pt would be druged beyond the moon but their eyes would still be open . You could still see the pain even if they couldn't screem . Everybody told me " just don't look in their eyes ". wish I hadda listened .

Poor guy I had had massive swelling in his face. His wife was with us and couldn't stop crying. He kept opening his eyes looking at me and that was the most horrifying look.

I'm pretty sure they extubated my guy soon after getting him also. Darrell in the ER said he wasn't real sure why Billano tubed him anyway. He was the least burnt of the 2 and he walked in and was talking to them. D said Billano thought it'd be a good idea.

OMG!!! for the love being intubated while you are alert and paralyzed is a traumatic think and even scarer when your are extubated. Although his neck looked pretty rough. I am just wondering which one of the 2 was driving to the hosp?????
